Meet the Team
Alissa Mundt
It's hard to image that this is my tenth year of teaching. It has not been the most direct path, but I'm grateful for the journey. I began teaching 4th Grade in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and then moved to Denver to teach Middle School math. I loved it, but something was missing so I left teaching. I thought I was leaving for good. I spent a year traveling, volunteering, and learning Spanish in South and Central America. When I returned to the states, I started law school at the University of Denver. Through my travels and through my time working in educational policy and on dependency and neglect cases, I found myself always drawn to education. If I were working on a case, I would visit the child at school or immediately help them with their homework on our visits. I tutored 2nd graders in Nicaragua for 6 months, even though my plan had been to just travel for a year. I just couldn't stay away. Fortunately, as I was preparing to graduate law school and take the bar exam, I met a couple DGS teahcers at a career fair. I immediately fell in love with DGS. I knew that if I were to return to the classroom, this is where I was going to make it happen and I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity to teach here.

Talk about a charmed life: I am a founding partner at the best school in Denver! The students, families, staff and community at Denver Green School are absolutely incredible. How did I get to be a math teacher in such an ideal environment?..
After bouncing around the country as a boy (Illinois, Arizona, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio), I settled into the Denver area when I was 10 years old. I wanted to be a schoolteacher from an early age, and I studied at the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk!) with that goal in mind. After internships in Kansas City, I took a detour all the way to Strasbourg, France, where I spent nearly three years teaching English. It was there that I learned French and Spanish and really broadened my understanding of other cultures and histories. When that chapter came to a close, I returned to Denver, and I've been teaching in DPS ever since.
DGS is a school that does so much more than teaching the basics. We created this school because we wanted to show that a great school could prepare students for a bright future and empower them to create it. I'm so gratified to be a part of DGS!
My main teaching responsibility is 6th grade math, and I'm super-excited to be working with Ms Mundt, Mr Truitt, and Ms Kent on the 6th grade team. It's going to be a fantastic school year!
Outside of school, you'll find me cooking and enjoying a great meal at home (I love to cook!), working in the garden, or out riding my bike. And I go back to France just as often as I can...

I developed a passion for experiential education while working as an instructor for the Colorado Outward Bound School before joining the Denver Green School as the Field Studies Coordinator in 2013. This role allows me to help design and execute all of our school's excursions to ensure that our students are given the opportunity to engage in authentic learning opportunities outside of the classroom. I will have the pleasure of student teaching for the first half of the year with the sixth grade class to learn from Ms. Mundt and Mr. Potter as I complete my Masters in Elementary Education. I love this school and hope to be here for many years to come.
I am so excited to be working with all of you this year as an ILT, Social Studies, and EfS teacher. I am a proud graduate of Colorado State University and love everything about my home state of Colorado. My journey as an educator began as a high school history teacher in Denver and Fort Collins. However, I have truly found my home here at DGS and love the new challenge of teaching middle school students. I am thrilled about the prospect of exploring the planet from our classroom and helping students find new and meaningful ways to connect with the world around them. When I am not in the classroom I enjoy running, traveling, snowboarding, or any other activity that gets me outside!
